A Familial Service From a Family of Electricians
By Alina Makhnovetsky
Always intended to be a family affair, the Millman name has been synonymous with electrical excellence for over 50 years. First, it was Jeff Millman’s father who initiated the link between Millman men and electricity, and as a contractor in New Jersey, taught his son the ropes, or rather the wires of the job. Officially however, Millman Electric, Co., Inc., was actually formed in 1985, around Jeff and a well-worn hatchback. Naturally, Jeff’s own two sons followed suit, and although today there is at least three Millman trucks on the road, Millman Electric, Co., Inc., manages to sustain the expertise, customer service and attentiveness of a small business.
Today, Millman Electric, Co., Inc., is a full service residential, electrical contractors firm. Besides installing fixtures, ceiling fans and service upgrades, the company also performs phone, cable and structured cable wiring for computers, home theaters, flat screens, as well as outside landscape wiring. More importantly, Millman Electric, Co., Inc., maintains reasonably priced fees and does not charge extra for emergency services and travel time, a feat not particularly prevalent in contracting. “A customer shouldn’t be penalized for living farther away from your shop or having to call you on a Saturday, because that is when the breaker decided to trip,” explains owner, Jeff Millman. Such care for his business and its customers has earned Millman a company virtually all based on word of mouth referrals and client repeat business.
Becky and Ed Dille of Trevose, PA hired Millman Electric Co., Inc., on a recommendation from their general contractor. At the time, the Dille’s were in the midst of a complete overhaul. “We were doing a major house remodel, re-doing every room of our home, adding two rooms and redesigning the master suite,” says Becky Dille. There was plenty of work being done to the outside of the couple’s home, as well. Some of the additions were a waterfall, a tree house for a granddaughter and a shed converted into a man cave.
Millman Electric Co., Inc., had the heavy responsibility of re-wiring every renovated inch of Dille’s property. The electrical contractor also installed two electric tankless water heaters, added automated outside lighting and skylights and also completed an automated operating system for Dille’s home. “They were very cognizant of the fact that we were actually living in the house throughout the process,” says Becky Dille. Millman Electric Co., Inc., was also mindful of the features the couple added to their home, such as crown molding and Venetian plaster and spent time accentuating these elements. “Jeff went out of his way to find creative solutions and I found him to be extremely professional and talented,” adds Becky Dille.
Naturally willing to go above and beyond for his clients, Jeff Millman even stepped in to help the Dille’s outside of his electrical duties. The couple had ordered two floor lamps from a catalog, but once the renovation was nearly finished, the Dille’s found the fixtures did not work well with their lifestyle. “The fixtures were top heavy with a small base, and with two dogs and a granddaughter, there is a good chance of them being knocked over,” recalls Millman. The good-natured contractor offered to resolve the issue, and worked with the manufacturer for a solution. Although, it took multiple phone calls, several meetings and about six months, Millman finally found a compromise and the manufacturer created new, larger bases for the lamps. A deal that pleased everyone.
“Putting my name in rather large letters on all of my trucks, proves that we are not hiding behind a made-up, fictitious name, but rather my name for all to see,” says Jeff Millman. In fact, with his two sons joining the business full-time, Millman Electric Co., Inc., has expanded even further, working with the newest technologies and the latest trends in home services. While the focus remains on maintaining their devoted customer base, the Millman men are happily embracing the challenges that newest electrical advances bring. Yet, while the business is growing exponentially, “nine out of ten times, you will still see a Millman on the job,” says owner Jeff Millman.
Millman Electric Co., Inc., would like to extend a thank you to Ed and Becky Dille for allowing photographs and granting an interview for this article.
